She was armed with a 4 inch gun, Oerlikon 20mm cannons, a 32 pounder gun, Machine guns and depth charge chutes and throwers.

Along with HMAS Bathurst she departed Sydney for service on the East Indies Station based on Singapore. In late may they sailed to Aden to serve with the Red Sea Force, and Lismore was utilised in patrolling the East African coast. In December transferred to Colombo for Indian Ocean convoy escort duty, including the Persian Gulf. During 1943 she was utilised for convoy escort duty in the Mediterranean where she survived many air attacks. In September 1943 she returned to the Eastern Fleet to undertake further escort duties in the Indian Ocean and spent the next 15 months at sea escorting convoys between India and Africa, before returning to Australia on 3 Dec 1944. In Sydney she joined the Pacific Fleet and for the rest of the war she performed escort duties for shipping before participating in the invasion of Okinawa between march and June 1945.

Following 5 years war service with the Australian navy she returned to Sydney on March 1946 and soon after was transferred to the Royal Netherlands Navy where she served a further 12 years as HNLMS Batjan
