Owned by the Charente Steam Ship Ltd, Liverpool and leased by the Commonwealth making four voyages as a troop ship before her control was passed to the British Admiralty on 6 Dec 1916.
After WW1 was used on the Calcutta - London route. The BOTANIST was wrecked on March 24th, 1920, on Komuriya Reef, on the East coast of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) while on a voyage from Calcutta to London with general cargo. Her passengers were rescued by SS Arracan. No casualties.
