Originally constructed for the New York to London route, making 137 trans Atlantic voyages before she became a military transport (HMT 158).

Twice she was torpedoed by U Boats with out success, before on 2 Feb 1917 she was successfully torpedoed in the Mediterranean south of Sardinia by two U Boats U64 and U67.

However,  On January 30th, 1918, MINNETONKA, on a voyage from Port Said to Marseille with a cargo of mails, was sunk by the German submarine U-64 (Robert Moraht), 40 miles ENE of Malta. She was not carrying troops at the time, but four crew members were lost.
