Pre War

Previous service as W20695 Sergeant with the 16th Battalion from 1 Oct 1941 until 20 Oct 1942. Enlisted in the 2nd AIF at Moora.

War Service

On 1 Oct 1941 he was called up from Reserved status as an agricultural worker, and entered camp at Melville where it seems he was allocated to Provost duties. On 10 Oct 1941 he was promoted Corporal, and on 24 Oct 1941 he was promoted Sergeant. Harold was admitted to the 110th Australian Base Hospital on 27 Dec 1941 for treatment, and was released to duty on 2 Jan 1942, but was granted sick leave until 5 Jan 1942 before rejoining the 13th Independent Provost Company at Melville.

On 1 Jul 1942 he transferred to the 4th Australian Provost Company, and on 8 Aug 1942 he attended the No 1 Cadre Course. On 21 Oct 1942 he transferred to the AIF with his new Regimental Number of WX34270. On 26 Oct 1942 at Moora, Harold fell when riding a motor cycle on duty, receiving head injuries and a lacerated scalp - classified as an accidental injury. On 4 Nov 1942 the result of his school was that he was qualified for general Provost duties.

Harold was on 5 Nov 1942 under the care of the 4th Casualty Clearing Station who then placed aboard Ambulance Train No.10 for the 109 Convalescent Depot at Point Walter where he remained until 23 Nov 1942. He rejoined his unit on 3 Dec 1942. On 14 Dec 1942 he was detached to the 3rd Australian Corps Provost Company for a week, and then on 10 Jan 1943 he notified the Army of a change of NOK, having married in the eastern states Dorothy Lilian ?. On 27 Apr 1943 he entrained at Bellevue intended for Queensland but he did not arrive there, instead on 6 May 1943 he boarded the HMT Katoomba in Sydney, disembarking in Townsville on 15 May 1943. His records show him as serving on Thursday Island from 15 May 1943 until 15 Jun 1943.

Harold was promoted WOII on 8 Dec 1943, and WOI on 23 Mar 1944. On 14 Jun 1944 he was emplaned at Higgins Field, an RAAF airstrip near the top of Cape York, for Townsville and then on 21 Aug 1944 he made the reverse journey. On 2 Sep 1944 he was evacuated to the 102nd Casualty Clearing Station with shingles, and 10 days later was released back to his unit.

On 8 May 1945 Harold was transferred to the 8th Australian Line of Command Provost Company in NSW where he served until 25 Sep 1945 when he transferred to Western Australia's 5th Line of Command Provost Company to prepare for discharge, arriving on 2 Oct 1945. On 15 Dec 1945 he transferred to the Holding Section before being discharged two days later on 17 Dec 1945.
