He was undergoing a full time camp from 17 Jul 1941, and on 22 Sep 1941 he was detached to the 13th Australian Independent Brigade Group Provost Platoon. On 1 Oct 1941 he was called up for full time duty at Melville and he was then allocated to Provost duties with the 13th Australian Independent Brigade Group Provost Platoon. On 10 Oct 1941 he was promoted Corporal, and on 24 Oct 1941 he was promoted Sergeant. Harold was admitted to the 110th Australian Base Hospital on 27 Dec 1941 for treatment, and was released to duty on 2 Jan 1942, but was granted sick leave until 5 Jan 1942 before rejoining the 13th Independent Provost Platoon at Melville before it moved to Chidlows.

On 1 Jul 1942 he and the rest of his unit were absorbed into the 4th Australian Infantry Division Provost Company, and on 8 Aug 1942 he attended the No 1 Cadre Course. While on the course, on 21 Oct 1942 he transferred to the AIF with a new Regimental Number of WX34270. On 26 Oct 1942 while training at Moora, Harold fell when riding a motor cycle on duty, receiving head injuries and a lacerated scalp, subsequently classified as an accidental injury. He was admitted to the 4th Australian Casualty Clearing Station and on the same day, the result of his time on the training course was that he was qualified for 'general Provost duties'. On 5 Nov 1942 the 4th Australian Casualty Clearing Station placed him aboard the 10th Australian Ambulance Train for the 109th Australian Convalescent Depot at Point Walter where he remained until 23 Nov 1942. Following discharge from the convalescent depot he rejoined his unit on 3 Dec 1942, and soon after on 14 Dec 1942 he was detached to the 3rd Australian Corps Provost Company for a week. On 10 Jan 1943 he notified the Army of a change of his next of kin, having married Dorothy Lilian Millward in Perth.

On 27 Apr 1943 he entrained at Bellevue intended for Queensland but he remained for a time in Sydney enroute as on 6 May 1943 he boarded the HMT Katoomba in Sydney, before disembarking in Townsville on 15 May 1943. His records show him as serving on Thursday Island from 15 May 1943 until 15 Jun 1943. Harold was promoted WO2 on 8 Dec 1943, and WO1 on 23 Mar 1944. On 14 Jun 1944 he was enplaned for Higgins Field, an RAAF airstrip near the top of Cape York, from Townsville and then on 21 Aug 1944 he made the reverse journey. On 2 Sep 1944 he was evacuated to the 102nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station with shingles, and 10 days later following treatment, he was released back to his unit.

On 8 May 1945 Harold was transferred to the 8th Australian Lines of Communication Provost Company in NSW where he served until 25 Sep 1945 when he transferred to Western Australia's 5th Australian Lines of Communication Provost Company to prepare for discharge, arriving on 2 Oct 1945.
