Brief History

Formed at Swan Barracks, East Perth in October 1939 from HQ 5th Military District, it controlled all field and administrative units in Western Australia. With the arrival of troops back from the Middle East, WA was reinforced with units of the 4th Infantry Division leading to its renaming as HQ 3rd Australian Corps as part of the Army restructure in April 1942, based at Mt Lawley. In late 1942 two Infantry Divisions and one Armoured Division were based in WA, but these units were progressively reduced as the threat to WA diminished, such that by Janary 1944 the Infantry units had all left WA, and in June the HQ was downgraded to again be known as Headquarters Western Command. The unit remained n control of all Army personnel in WA ntil the end of the war.
