Enlisted in the CMF on 6 Mar 1941, before being called up for full time service on 11 Nov 1941 at the Melville camp. On 16 Dec 1941 he was appointed Lance Corporal and classified as a Technical Storeman Grade TG III. On 21 Apr 1942 he was promoted Corporal, and on 8 Jan 1943 to Lance Sergeant. On 12 Feb 1943 he entrained for Adelaide and then relocated to Darwin with the 11th Battalion on 30 Feb 1943, arriving on 3 Mar 1943.
