On 4 May 1942 Herbert enlisted in the Volunteer Defence Corps, and was allotted to the 12th (Jarrah) VDC Battalion. On 31 Jul 1944 the unit and all personnel were transferred to the reserve.

Herb's son Arthur Herbert also served in the Jarrah VDC Battalion (W84411), joining immediately before his father.
