War Service
Herbert enlisted in the CMF as a member of the 10th Light Horse Regiment on 21 Oct 1941 in Bunbury and was called up for full time service on 5 Jan 1942. On 21 Apr 1942 he was detached to the 6th Infantry Brigade, with initial posting on 31 May 1942 to A Coy of the 10th Recce Battalion. On 16 Jun 1942 he was transferred to the 25th Recce Battalion (25th Cavalry Regiment). From 7 Dec 1942 until 23 Jan 1943 he was granted Leave without Pay (LWOP). rejoining at Moora. On 13 May 1943 he was again granted LWOP, this time until 18 Jun 1943.
Sent to Victoria on 28 Sep 1943, and arrived there on 2 Oct 1943 where he joined the 19th Australian Infantry Training Battalion at Dubbo in NSW to days later. On 6 Nov 1943 he was sent to a mortar course in Bathurst until 5 Dec 1943. He then joined the 23rd Australian Infantry Training Battalion at Cowra on 8 Mar 1944. On 19 May 1944 he was sent to Canungra Jungle Training Centre until 5 Aug 1944 when he was sent to the Northern Territory. On 18 Aug 1944 he was transferred to the 16th Battalion, and on 21 Nov 1944 embarked with them on the USAT Evangaline for Jacquinot Bay in New Britain, arriving there on 26 Nov 1944.
On 13 May 1945 Herbert was evacuated to the 2nd Australian Field Ambulance for treatment for epilepsy, being sent back to his unit the next day. However, on 28 May 1945 he was admitted to the 105th Australian Casualty Clearing Station with epilepsy and they transferred him to the 2/8th Australian General Hospital on 1 Jun 1945.
