Pre War

Married Myrtle Edith Bechtel in Beverley in 1916 before going overseas. Myrtle died on 29 Oct 1967 in South Perth aged 73

War Service

Entered the Claremont camp on 31 Mar 1916 and trained initially with the 19th reinforcement draft for the 10th Light Horse Regiment. On 9 Jun 1916 was transferred to the 20th draft, and travelled with them to Egypt.

On arrival in Moascar, Egypt, Herbert was placed in the isolation camp on 25 Aug 1916 and kept there until 23 Sep 1916 when he joined the Light Horse training unit. He finally joined the 10th Light Horse Regiment in the field on 23 Oct 1916 at Hod el Amara and spent the next month with them near Romani.

In Feb 1917 he was ill with lumbago for a week being treated by the 3rd Light Horse Field Ambulance, and then again on 10 Apr 1917, this time in the 14th Australian General Hospital with cystitis until 22 Aug 1917. While he returned to his unit on 26 Sep 1917, it was not long before he was again in hospital on 4 Oct 1917, this time with malaria. Several malarial relapses followed and he spent most of the war in poor health.

Discharged 5th Military District 21 Nov 1919

The 1917 Feb-Mar edition of The Drill of the Foot-Hills mentions his name only, no details.
