Enlisted in the CMF on 26 Apr 1942, he was called up for full time duty on 20 Jul 1942, and sent to the 13th Training Battalion at Northam camp. Following the completion of his training he was posted on 6 Feb 1943 to the 11th (City of Perth) Battalion classified as a Driver Mechanic. On 21 Feb 1943 the unit left for South Australia, and from there the Northern Territory, arriving there on 10 Mar 1943. Soon after arrival in the Northern Territory he transferred to the 2nd AIF on 15 Apr 1943. On 1 Jul 1943 he was granted Proficiency Pay.

Pre War

During 1935 James married Gertrude Elizabeth Brockwell. Gertrude died on 19 Jun 1989 in Thornlie, aged 82. Immediately prior to the war James was employed at the Byford State brickworks.

Enlisted in the CMF on 26 Apr 1942, he was called up for full time duty on 20 Jul 1942, and sent to the 13th Training Battalion at Northam camp. Following the completion of his training he was posted on 6 Feb 1943 to the 11th Australian Infantry Battalion (City of Perth Regiment) classified as a Driver Mechanic.
