John was mobilised on 10 Jan 1942 and was posted to the Western Command Supply Column as a Driver. On 27 Jan 1942 he was called up for full time service, and on 17 May 1942 he was transferred to the 13th Australian Infantry Brigade Group's 4th Battalion. John transferred to the 2nd AIF on 12 Jul 1942
