Jack enlisted in the CMF on 28 Mar 1941 in Perth and was sent to join the [[13th Australian Infantry Training Battalion]]. He resigned on 25 Jul 1941 in order to enlist in the 2nd AIF on 28 Jul 1941. At enlistment he was temporarily unfit due ot an eye problem. On 5 Aug 1941 Jack was allocated to the AASC. On 1 Oct 1941 he was granted a period of lece without pay (2-8 Oct 1941). On 9 Nov 1941 Jack was transferred to the AASC Group Reinforcement Pool. on 21 Feb 1942 he was enrolled in Blacksmiths Course No. 14 at the AASC Training Centre at Claremont, rejoining his unit on 10 Mar 1942, and he was then posted on 12 March to the [[1st Australian Armourd Division Support Group Company AASC]]. On 27 Mar 1942 he embarked on [[USAT Monterey]] in Fremantle for the eastern states, with 4 Apr 1942 finding him transferred to the [[2/1st Anti-Aircraft Brigade Company AASC]] in Tamworth, NSW.
