On 17 Sep 1941 John was called up for full time service and when allocated to the 9th Australian Auxiliary Horse Transport Company, he was given a trade grouping of Driver Horse Transport T/G III. He was granted leave from 17- 20 October, and 20 - 22 November 1941. On 1 May 1943 John was charged with having disobeyed a lawful command on 39 Apr 1943. Found guilty he was fined 20/- ($2).
