On entering Blackboy Hill camp, John was allocated to the 66th Depot Company to undergo initial training. Seven weeks later on 20 Jun 1916 he was allocated to the 3rd reinforcement draft for the 44th Battalion.  However two months  later (22 Aug 1916) he was transferred back to the 6th Depot Squad.  He spent 10 days from 3 - 13 Oct 1916 in the [[8th Australian General Hospital]] at Fremantle with fibrosis of the lung, followed by 20 days from 1 till 20 Nov 1916 there in November with a crushed foot.  Discharged permanently unfit on 21 Dec 1916 due to the crushed foot.

Post War

Wife was Azelia Helena (nee Morgan). Azelia died on 31 Jul 1954 in Hamilton Hill, aged 81. A stillborn female child was delivered in Fremantle during 1902. Electoral Roll entries - 1910 Fraser street East Fremantle, civil servant with wife; 1916 'Cookaberra' Armadale, horticulturist; 1925 at 1 Fraser street, East Fremantle, orchardist ; in 1949 Azelia was on Davilak estate, South Fremantle.
