War Service

Soon after entering Blackboy Hill camp, John was allocated to the Medical Corps reinforcement draft, and travelled with them to Egypt. At Serapeum in Egypt he was taken on strength by the 4th Australian Field Ambulance on 22 Apr 1916. On 7 May 1916 he was allocated to 'C' Section of the Filed Ambulance, and on 1 Jun 1916 he embarked with them in Alexandria for Marseilles in France, disembarking on 9 Jun 1916.

John was granted leave in England from 19 - 29 Sep 1917, and rejoined his unit in France on 5 Oct 1917. Granted leave to the UK again between 24 Sep and 11 Oct 1918, and again on 4 - 18 Mar 1919, rejoining his unit in Belgium. On 26 Mar 1919 he was detached to the 12th Australian Field Ambulance until 5 Apr 1919.

John began his journey back to Australia, leaving France for Southampton in England on 15 Apr 1919 where he was attached to the Australian Medical Corps Training Depot until 28 May 1919. His journey home was as part of the nursing staff of the ship. However, he was in need of medical treatment for Scabies during the journey home on 1 Jul 1919.

Discharged at the 5th Military District on 22 Aug 1919.

Post War

In 1920 John is thought to have married Annie Maria Viney in Perth. Annie died in Morowa on 24 Dec 1973, aged 78.
