John enlisted at the No. 4 Recruit Depot RAAF on 14 Apr 1942 and mustered as a Guard. Following the basic drill training John was posted on 3 May 1942 to RAAF Base Pearce. Soon after, on 27 May 1942 he was transferred to No. 4 Embarcation Depot RAAF in South Australia, and three months later on 28 Aug 1942 his posting changed again to No. 4 Service Flying Training School RAAF at Geraldton.
John was transferred on 10 Feb 1943 to the No. 35 (TransportZ) Squadron
