John enlisted in the Volunteer Defence Corps at Maddington on 29 Mar 1942 and was posted to the [[2nd (Fremantle) VDC Battalion]]. From 16 - 23 Mar 1942 he attended an NCO School at Guildford and on 1 Jul 1942 he was promoted Sergeant. From 18 Jul until 8 Aug 1942 he attended the No. 4 Guerilla Course at Narrogin. John reported an injury to his back on 24 Nov 1944. No investigation was required, and the following note appears in his file.
