Pre War

Prior to emigrating to Australia John had served as a Petty Officer with an Infantry unit in the British Marines (an arm of their navy).

War Service

On 3 Sep 1941 John enlisted at Swanbourne in the CMF and was posted to the 5th Australian Garrison Battalion. On 1 Jul 1943 he was granted Proficiency Pay at naval base/ From 9 - 19 May he undertook a Hygiene Course on Rottnest and on 20 Jun 1944 he was appointed as a Lance Corporal.


John was transferred to the 10th Australian Garrison Battalion on 3 Nov 1944 before being transferred again on 6 Dec 1944, this time to the 110th Australian Base Hospital where he was promoted Corporal on 7 Nov 1945. He became a patient on 28 Jan 1946 with an abscess to his right elbow, before returning to his unit on 6 Feb 1946. (John had volunteered to work through the demobilisation period.)
