==War Service==

Entered camp on 26 Mar 1917 and 3 days later was allocated to the 10th reinforcement draft for the 51st Battalion.  However, from 23 Apr 1917 until 28 Sep 1917 he served in Australia as a member of the 5th District Guard.  On 28 Sep 1917 he was transferred to the 27th reinforcement draft for the 11th Battalion and travelled with them to England from Melbourne, arriving at Devonport on 24 Dec 1917, and disembarking on the 27th.

On arrival in England he was sent to the 2nd Training Battalion at Sutton Veny.  On 1 Apr 1918 he proceeded overseas to France, but as a reinforcement for the 51st Battalion who he joined on 6 Apr 1918 after a few days in the 4th Divisions Base Depot at Calais.

Joseph was wounded in action on 24 Apr 1918 near Villers-Bretonneux, receiving severe guns shot wounds to his right leg and left thigh.  Seen initially by the 25th Field Ambulance on 25 Apr 1918 he was treated for a bullet wound to his testicles and both legs. Seen next by the 12th Casualty Clearing Station on 26 Apr 1918, he was sent on to the 5th General Hospital in Rouen where he was admitted on 29 Apr 1918 before being evacuated to England the next day.  In England he was admitted to the Alexandria Hospital in Cosham.  On 21 Jun 1918 he was transferred to the [[3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital]]. Discharged from hospital on 30 Jun 1918 he was processed for return to Australia on medical grounds for a 'Change'.
