Although he first signed enlistment papers on 19 Oct 1916, he does not commence training until 5 Jan 1917 and is immediately made a member of the 19th reinforcement draft for the 28th Battalion. He was promoted for the voyage to Lance Corporal.

On arrival in England he joined the 7th Training Battalion at Rollestone as a Private to complete his training.

Entered France via Folkestone on 17 Jun 1918 after periods in British hospitals with mumps and influenza. Soon after arriving in France (2 Jul 1918) he was admitted to the 40th Stationary Hospital with periostitis (a condition that results in inflammation of the band of tissue that surrounds bones known as the periosteum) and he returned to England on 26 Aug 1918. Did not join the 28th Battalion in the field.

After recovering, he was posted to AIF HQs. Leonard returned to Australia as a member of ship's staff, before being discharged by 5th Military District on 26 May 1920.
