Pre War

On 20 Jun 1941 Max married Violet Winifred Bell (1922 - 2012) in Kelmscott. They had two daughters.

War Service

Max enlisted in Bunbury on 3 Apr 1941 and was allocated to the 10th Australian Light Horse Regiment ww2. He was called up for full time duty from 17 Dec 1941. On 3 Jun 1942 Max was AWOL for a time, earning him a 10/- ($1) fine and loss of a days Pay (6/- or 60 cents). His March 1943 misdemeanor resulted in a fine of 30/- ($3) and one in April 1944 20/- ($2). On 12 May 1944 Max boarded a train for the eastern seaboard, arriving at the 1st Australian Base Depot - Personnel on 28 May 1944.

Max was sent to the 16th Australian Infantry Training Battalion on 6 Jun 1944, and on 20 Jul 1944 he was transferred to the 3rd Australian Motor Transport Training Depot at Bonegilla for a course before being returned to the 23rd Australian Infantry Training Battalion. On 21 Dec 1944 he was passed on to the Australian Reinforcement Training Battalion (Jungle Warfare). On 13 Jan 1945 he was admitted to the 22nd Australian Camp Hospital who the same day forwarded him to the 128th Australian General Hospital. On 17 Jan 1945 he was released to the Queensland Line of Communication Area General Details Depot before rejoining his unit at Canungra on 22 Jan 1945. Max required medical attention for fibrositis again from the 22nd Australian Camp Hospital on 3 Feb 1945. They again referred him the same day to 128th Australian General Hospital, who returned him to Queensland Line of Communication Area General Details Depot on 7 Feb 1945. On 13 Feb 1945 he had rejoined the Jungle Warfare training school.

However, on 7 May 1945 he was medically reassessed as category 'B1' and as such was transferred on 7 Aug 1945 to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot who discharged Max on 3 Dec 1945.
