Brief History

This Unit was raised at Darwin as 10 Mobile Fighter Sector Headquarters' on 10 May 1943, and they commenced operation immediately. During October 1944 the name or the Unit was changed to 110 Mobile Fighter Sector Headquarters, and during March 1944 to 110 Mobile Fighter Control Unit (MFCU). The Unit moved to Sattler, in the Northern Territory, on 8 Apr 1944 where they remained until it was embarked on the USAT Mexico Victory at Darwin. The ship departed Darwin on 18 Jan 1945 and arrived at Morotai on 31 Jan 1945. Unloading of Unit equipment commenced next day, and a camp was erected adjacent to 30 Fighter Control Squadron United States Army, with whom operations room staff received training. The Unit was fully operational by 1 Apr 1945.

On 18 April a detachment prepared to participate in Operation 'Oboe 2', the landing at Balikpapan. The detachment travelled with the assault convoy which arrived off Balikpapan on 1 Jul 1945. The detachment was operational by 4 Jul 1945. On 16 Jul 1945, the remainder of IIOMFCU became A1r Defence Headquarters, Morotai.
