Brief History

No. 114 Air-Sea Rescue Flight was formed at Cairns on 18 July 1945. The type of aircraft operated by this unit were Martin Mariner and Consolidated PBY Catalina Flying Boats. During the months September to December 1945, the unit did little air-sea rescue work. It dropped leaflets over the Barrier Reef, the Coral Sea atolls and the south-east Papuan coastline. ln December 1945 approval was granted for the unit to undertake limited transport work to Brisbane and Sydney carrying personnel from the islands.

ln January and February of the following year the unit was engaged in several major rescue operations. At the end of September 1946 the unit moved to Garbutt, Queensland. The unit received instructions on 11 September 1947 that it was to disband and reform under Search and Rescue Wing.
