Brief History

No. 40 Zone filter Centre was formed at No. 5 Embarkation Depot in Perth on 1 September 1942. The advance party travelled to Broome aboard the MV Koolinda, arriving on 19 Sep 1942. The unit occupied s1x houses in Broome, and established 1ts operations room in the Catholic orphanage. On 10 Jan 1944, a fire broke out west of the aerodrome, and RAAF personnel were used to control it. On 17 February 1943, Leading J\Jrcraflman Rober ~ wos killed "' a ~hooting accident during a practice shoot at Cable• llcach. On 27 january t945, the wut becdme Air Defence Headquarters, Broome.
