Brief History
No. 40 Zone filter Centre was formed at No. 5 Embarkation Depot in Perth on 1 September 1942. The advance party travelled to Broome aboard the MV Koolinda, arriving on 19 Sep 1942. The unit occupied six houses in Broome, and established 1ts operations room in the Catholic orphanage. On 10 Jan 1944, a fire broke out west of the aerodrome, and RAAF personnel were used to control it. On 17 February 1943, a member of the unit was accidentally killed during a practice shoot at Cable Beach.
On 27 January t945, the unit became Air Defence Headquarters, Broome.
