Richard was called up for full time service on 12 Dec 1941, and on 22 Dec 1941 he was sent to No 5 Camp at Melville. Richard was admitted to the 37th Australian Camp Hospital on 26 Jan 1942, rejoining his unit on 12 Feb 1941. On 28 Feb 1942 he was detached to 19th Australian Garrison Battalion, rejoining his unit, which was now Area Signals Company, Western Command Signals on 4 Mar 1942 in order to attend a course at the Trade Training Depot at Claremont.
