On 26 Apr 1942 Robert enlisted inthe Volunteer Defence Corps at Armadale and was allocated to the "H.V Company of 3rd (Swan) VDC Battalion. On 28 Feb 1943 he was transferred to the 2nd (Fremantle) VDC Battalion, and was discharged on 15 Nov 1943.

Post War

On 9 Aug 1952 Robert married Mildred Rebecca Morgan (1928 - 2008) locally. Mildred died on 6 Feb 2008 in Armadale, aged 79. They had four children.
