World War 1

Roy had enlisted as an 18 year old on 22 Jul 1915, and trained with the 9th Reinforcements for the 16th Battalion. Roy joined the 16th Battalion on 8 Jan 1916, but from 14 Jan until 5 Mar 1916 he required treatment in hospital. He travelled with them to France before being wounded in action on 12 Aug 1916. The wound must have been slight as he rejoined his unit three days later on 15 Aug 1916.

On 3 Nov 1916 he was transferred to the 2nd Division's Ammunition Column, remustered as a Driver, and following another brief spell receiving medical attention he was posted to the 6th Australian Field Artillery Brigade's Ammunition Column. Other than one more short period receiving medical attention in 1917, he served until he boarded the SS Kaiser-i-hind on 6 May 1919, for Australia and discharge.
