On 13 Sep 1939 she struck a mine laid by German Submarine U-13 and was damaged, with one person killed. However, she was towed by two tugs to Tilbury for repairs which took a month. Soon after she was requisitioned to act as a troopship.

In early February 1942 she carried the 2/14th Battalion from Bombay to Adelaide, arriving there on 24 March. Converted into a personnel ship in 1944 she was used as an accommodation ship from Sep 1945 until 1946 after which she was briefly used as a troopship again before returning to Ellerman Line management. Returned to commercials service in 1947, she was scrapped in 1956
