The SS Luckenbach was a Rappahannock class store ship originally, acquired for the US Navy for use in WW1. Originally launched as ''SS Pommern'' for the North German Lloyd Line and used on the Australian freight service via the Cape of Good Hope. Interned in Honolulu after the outbreak of WW1, she was taken over by the US Navy when the US entered the war, and commissioned as ''USS Rappahannock (AF-6) on 8 Dec 1917 an used primarily for stock transport.
