War Service

Entered the Claremont camp for the Light Horse on 21 Oct 1914.

Embarked for Gallipoli on 16 May 1915 aboard SS Lutzow from Alexandria. Wounded in Action on 30 May 1915 at Quinn's Post and embarked on HMHS Gascon for Alexandria. Admitted to the 1st Australian General Hospital at Heliopolis on 7 Jun 1915. When admitted to 1AGH the bullet was still lodged in his neck. on 20 Jul 1915 Sam was transferred to the Convalescent Hospital at Ras-el-Tin, before being discharged to duty on 5 Aug 1915 at Mustapha Barracks.

On 10 Aug 1915 Sam again embarked at Alexandria for Gallipoli, this time on HMT Cawdor Castle, rejoining his unit on 15 Aug 1915. On 7 Sep he sought treatment for diarrhoea from the 13th Casualty Clearing Station before returning to duty on 13 Sep 1915. However, the problem was not solved, as on 9 Oct Sam was seen by the 3rd Light Horse Field Ambulance near Fisherman's Hut at Anzac Cove and treated for severe diarrhoea before being transferred on 12 Oct 1915 to the 13th Casualty Clearing Station at Mudross on Lemnos Island. Evacuated to Egypt again, this time on HMHS Valdivia, and on 18 Oct 1915 Sam was admitted again to the 1st Australian General Hospital in Heliopolis. He was transferred on 14 Nov 1915 to Suez where he boarded HMAT A30 Borda for Australia and 'a rest' on 15 Nov 1915. Documents show that he was suffering from "Bullet wounds, Chronic Diarrhoea, Anaemia & Insomnia."

On 17 Mar 1917 Sam had returned to Egypt from Australia and he joined the Details camp at Moascar. He was again taken on strength by the 3rd Light Horse Brigade on 26 Mar 1917 and on 13 June sent to the Cookery School at Ismailia before being transferred to the 3rd Light Horse Training Regiment.

Finally, Sam rejoined his old unit the 10th Light Horse Regiment on 6 Dec 1917 at Moascar before being taken on strength by the 3rd Light Horse Brigade headquarters. Granted early repatriation he left from Port Said on 29 Apr 1919.

Discharged by 5th Military District on 20 Jul 1919.

Post War

In 1922 Samuel married Leah Nora Violet Evans. Leah died 16 Oct 1987, aged 91 in East Victoria Park, Western Australia.

Notes

Sam was an original member of the 10th Light Horse, who after a 'spell' in Australia returned as part of the unit's 24th reinforcement draft.
