Pre War

War Service

Viola enlisted in the Australian Women's Army Service on 23 Jun 1944 and was sent to 6th AWS Training Company at Guildford for basic training until 22 Jul 1944 when she was posted to HQ Fremantle Fixed Defences, remaining with them through several name changes until 6 Jan 1946. On 4 Sep 1944 she was classified as a Trade Group III Cook, and on 23 Jun 1945 after 12 months service when she was paid as an adult. On 7 Jan 1946 Viola was transferred to 7th Australian Advanced Ordnance Depot where she was regraded as a Clerk TG II. On 21 Jun 1946 she transferred to Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot for discharge which occurred on 1 Jul 1946

Post War

Electoral Roll entries: 1949 at "Lyndale" orchard, Byford; 1954 at Bunbury road, Armadale; 1958 at 13 Wheatley street, Gosnells, typist. During 1964 Viola married William Edward Jon Shortill in the local area. Bill was a West Australian who had served as an Ordinary Seaman at HMAS Lonsdale before being discharged on 17 Sep 1943.

Electoral Roll entries: 1968 - 1972 at 7 Goodchap street, Aspley, Queensland; 1977 at 87 O'Loghlen street, Latham, ACT. Bill died on 14 Apr 2004 in Latham, ACT, aged 83.
