On arrival in Egypt he undertook further training including a period from 28 Oct to 9 Dec 1916 with the Imperial School of Instruction at Zeitoun. Following the training he was allocated to the 3rd Signal Troop.

Walter reported ill to the 2nd Australian Stationary Hospital in El Arish on 20 Jul 1917, before being transferred in turn to the 65th Casualty Clearing Station at Rafa, the 3rd Light Horse Field Ambulance in Marakesh, back to the 2nd Australian Stationary Hospital on 24 Jul 1917 and then transported by hospital train to Cairo where he entered the 24th Stationary Hospital.

On 1 Sep 1917 he was assessed at the 14th Australian General Hospital in Abbassia and, diagnosed with malaria, was sent to the convalescent hospital in Montayeh. During January and February 1918 he seems to have had another bout of malaria before being posted to the Signals Training Unit at Moascar in June of 1918.
