Brief History

This unit began life at Swan barracks in Perth during September 1939 as 5th Military District Records Office to take over from civilian staff the collection and collation of all military records in Western Australia. In November they were renamed District Records Office, Western Command and in May 1941 they moved to Adelaide Terrace. I February 1942 they had another name change to Western Command Records office, and a month later during March to 5th Military District Records Office. In May 1942 they not only became Western Australian Line of Communication Area Records Office, but were expanded to manage up to 50,000 records.

In February 1943 they moved to East Perth where as a result of a restructure of 2nd Echelon units in July 1944 they became the Western Australia Echelon & Records. They continued to hold and process individual and unit records until after the end of the war.
