In September 1908 Bill married Jane Maria Massey (1884 - 1953) in Meriden, Warwickshire. He was a labourer, and Jane a domestic servant. On 16 Dec 1912, Bill and Jane with three year old Florence embarked on the ''SS Ajana'' in London for Fremantle. Florence died on 9 Jan 1987.

Bill enlisted on 24 May 1916 at Fremantle. As 5850 Private Hall he was posted to the 16th reinforcement draft for the 27th Battalion. He embarked in Fremantle on [[HMAT A16 Port Melbourne]] on 30 Oct 1916, and disembarked in Devonport on 28 Dec 1916.  He joined his battalion in France on 18 Feb 1917, and was wounded in action i France on 20 Sep 1917 in the battel known as Menin Road. The wound must have been slight as he rejoined his battalion three days later, and continued with them until he enjoyed some leave in late January 1918. Bill was appointed Lance Corporal on 14 Oct 1918, and returned to Australia aboard [[SS Leicestershire]] on 3 May 1919, arriving in Fremantle on 3 Jun 1919.
