Brief History

Originally formed as 1st Pioneer Company and 2nd Pioneer Company at Ingleburn in March 1942. from infantry training units to undertake construction projects around the Sydney area, and then from May on supply lines for Darwin in the Katherine (Northern Territory) area. In October 1942 they combined to form the 2/11th Australian Army Troops Company at Katherine, responsible for construction, maintenance and operation of base facilities. They had detachments at Larrimah, Manbullo, Mataranka, and Pine Creek. In July 1943 they were relkieved and moved back to Kapooka in New South Wales for rest and retraining.


In January 1944 they moved to Wongabel on the Atherton Tablelands in north Queensland, responsible for the construction and maintenance of power generation and water pumps throughout the tablelands area. They moved to Morotai in May 1945 to support the troops involved in the liberation of Borneo, and remained there for the rest of the war.
