Enlisted in Armadale on 22 Apr 1942 with Army No W67680, and taken on strength by the 2nd VDC Battalion the same day. On 6 Nov 1943 his Army No was changed to W62259.
Melville was discharged at his own request on 7 Feb 1944 at South Perth. Medical records indicate earlier kidney problems, and on enlistment he had answered yes to question about Neurasthenia or Nervous Breakdown. He also answered yes to being gassed in WW1, as well as having bullet wounds to both legs.
