Ernest enlisted in the RAAF at No. 4 RAAF Recruiting Centre on 16 Jun 1942, mustered as a General Hand - Works. later the same day he was sent to No. 4 Recruit Depot RAAF to undertake No. P167 Recruit Drill Course. On completion he was posted to No. 77 Squadron RAAF which was moving to the Northern Territory. However, before it moved he was designated to join No. 4 Service Flying Training School RAAF at Geraldton where on 16 Dec 1942 he was appointed Leading Aircraftman. He was then, on 19 Jan 1943 posted to the No. 72 Operational Base Unit RAAF and he remained withthem until he was posted to No. 75 Operational Base Unit RAAF on 12 Oct 1943.
