Pre War

Had been a member of the Air Training Corps for 4 months before being called up.

War Service

Mervyn was enlisted into the RAAF at the No. 4 RAAF Recruiting Centre which was in McNeil Chambers on 18 Aug 1944 and undertook basic training with the No. 4 Recruit Depot RAAF at Pearce until 27 Sep 1944 when he transferred to the No. 4 Stores Depot RAAF. He was sent to No. 5 Personnel Depot RAAF for posting to a unit. Identified for further training, on 14 Feb 1945 Mervyn was posted to the No. 1 Engineering School RAAF. With his training completed he returned to Western Australian with a posting to No. 85 Squadron RAAF on 4 Jun 1945.


The Squadron was at that time based at Pearce Airbase, and Mervyn was working on Mk 5 Spitfires. On 7 May 1945 With the cessation of hostilities in Europe, the Squadron reduce in size prior to being disbanded and Mervyn was released to Private life through No. 5 Personnel Depot RAAF Discharge Section.
