On 13 Oct 1944 he was sent to [[No. 5 Personnel Depot RAAF]] for posting to a unit. Identified for further training, Mervyn completed a Trainee Fitters Course on 19 Jan 1945, and on 14 Feb 1945 Mervyn was posted to the [[No. 1 Engineering School RAAF]]. With his training as a Flight Mechanic completed he was redrafted as a Flight Mechanic and returned to Western Australian with a posting to [[No. 85 Squadron RAAF]] on 4 Jun 1945.
