Ernest enlisted in the RAAF at No. 4 RAAF Recruiting Centre on 16 Jun 1942, mustered as a General Hand - Works. later the same day he was sent to No. 4 Recruit Depot RAAF to undertake No. P167 Recruit Drill Course. On completion he was posted to No. 77 Squadron RAAF which was moving to the Northern Territory. During 1954 Ernest married Wendy Estelle Rogers in Perth.
