Ben entered camp on 8 Nov 1915 and 2 days later was told that he was being allocated to the Artillery Corps, and that this involved going to Melbourne for specialist training. On 15 Dec 1915 he was appointed Gunner, and on 12 Feb 1916 allocated to the 10th Field Artillery Brigade then being raise din Australia as part of the 4th Division.
