Pre War

At time of his Mobilisation, Arthur had 3 children, having married Ivy Louise Skardon on 18 Aug 1928.

War Service

Originally mobilised in the CMF as a General Reinforcement, Arthur was called up for full time duty on 29 Sep 1942 and when he enlisted in the AIF on 9 Feb 1943 he was noted as having been a driver with the 5th AASC Company.

Following his enlistment with the CMF he was sent on 3 Oct 1942 to the AASC Training Depot before transferring on 22 Jan 1943 to the 3rd Australian Corps Troops Ammunition Company. on 1 Mar 1943 he was charged with having been AWOL from 10:00pm until 11:59pm on 27 Feb 1943. For this he was fined £1. On 14 Apr 1943 he transferred to the 38th Australian Company ASC. Here on 9 Feb 1943 he enlisted in the AIF. Promoted Acting Corporal on 15 Apr 1943, he remained with them until he was sent on a course for potential instructors in December 1943. Although he scored 61% for written work; 53% for practical; and 65% for oral work, he was deemed to have failed the course, with it noted that he was not the instructor type, having worked hard but lacked confidence.

Returning to his unit he reverted to Driver and was found to be proficient. On 23 Mar 1944 he was appointed Lance Corporal, but on 1 Jun 1944 he again reverted to Driver. On 16 Jun 1944 he was transferred to Victoria aboard the HMT Katoomba, arriving in Sydney on 26 Jun 1944, and travelling south by train. On 21 Jul 1944 he was posted to 1st Australian Army Ordnance Corps Training Battalion at Hume. On 23 Aug 1944 he was admitted to the 106th Australian General Hospital in Bonegilla with Lymphangitis right leg. Although he was released to his unit on 1 Sep 1944, he was readmitted to 106th Australian General Hospital from 14 - 20 Sep 1944.

On 9 Oct 1944 he was detached to the 1st Australian Ordnance Vehicle Park in Hume, and on 20 Nov 1944 he was transferred to the 3rd Australian Base Ordnance Depot (Technical Stores), graded as a Group III Clerk. Transferred out to the 18th Australian Advanced Ordnance Depot on 22 Jan 1945, he embarked in Townsville on the HMT Katoomba on 10 Mar 1945 for Jacquinot Bay in New Guinea, arriving there on 17 Mar 1945. On 17 Oct 1945 he was promoted Corporal, and in Dec 1945 and early Jan 1946 his services were deemed necessary for him to be retained. This changed in late January 1946, allowing him to be returned to Australia in preparation for discharge. On 25 Jan 1946 he boarded the SS Taos Victory, disembarking in Brisbane on 29 Jan 1946. By 10 Feb 1946 he was back in WA, where he was discharged on 13 Feb 1946.
