Pre War

Had completed 7th Standard education.

War Service

On 15 Apr 1943 Mary enlisted in the Australian Women's Army Service in Perth, and on the 18th she was posted to the 6th AWS Training Company. Training completed, on 24 Jun 1943 she was posted to the 4th Australian Ambulance Car Company as a Trade Group II Motor Transport Driver. From 14 Jul until 1 Oct 1943 she was detached to the 110th Australian Base Hospital staff. This was followed by a period with the 38th Australian Camp Hospital from 3 Nov 1943 until 26 Jan 1944 after which she was detached to the 118th Australian General Hospital. While there she was admitted to hospital to have recurrent headaches investigated (9 - 12 Mar 1944).


On 15 Apr 1944 Mary received a pay rise following 12 months service and from 6 - 10 Mar 1945 while with the hospital staff she was admitted to have teeth extracted. From 22 May 1945 Mary spent a month with Fremantle Fortress before returning to Ambulance Company work with the 75th Australian Camp Hospital (26 Jun - 10 Oct 1945). On 11 Oct 1945 Mary was again working with 110th Australian Base Hospital until her transfer to Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot for discharge at Karrakatta on 10 May 1946.

Post War

Electoral Roll entries: 1954 at Fifth road, Armadale,; 1958 at Stepney road, Armadale; 1963 - 1977 at 192 South West highway, Armadale, Eugene was a boot maker. On 6 Jan 1992 Mary was living at Unit 16/15 Dale road, Armadale.

Notes

During 1947 Mary married Eugene Malcolm Esteridge Bruce in the local area. Malcolm had served in the RAAF as a Leading Aircraftman, finishing with No 14 Squadron. Eugine died on 10 Sep 2017 in Forrestfield, aged 93.
