Pre War

George had seen service during WW1 as 2466 Trooper Elworthy who embarked 16 May 1916 for the Middle East where as a reinforcement for the 10th Light Horse he was posted to the 1st Anzac Battalion of the Imperial Camel Corps. He embarked for return to Australia on 15 Mar 1919. On his return, during 1919 George had married Iris Lena James (1887-1940) in Katanning. Their daughters were Muriel Iris Elworthy born 1921 and Gwenyth Lena Napier Elworthy (1928-2007). Iris died on 7 Oct 1940 in Kelmscott

WW 2 Service

George enlisted for part time service in Claremont on 30 Nov 1940 and was allocated to 'Y' Company of the 5th Australian Garrison battalion following the death of his wife. He named Muriel as his next of kin. In January 1941 he completed a 14 day continuous training cap at Melville. While he was called up for full time service on 15 May 1941 it appears to have commenced on 15 Dec 1941.


On 11 May 1942 he transferred to the 29th Australian Garrison Battalion at Swanbourne. Admitted to the 110th Australian Base Hospital on 4 Oct 1942, he was transferred to LMCH on 27 October and returned to his unit on 1 December. Needing help again he was evacuated to the camp hospital at Guildford on 14 Apr 1943, returning to his battalion on 2 May. Granted Leave Without Pay on 8 Dec 1943, he added some leave credits and returned to the battalion on 25 Jan 1944. On 1 Jul 1944 George was granted Proficiency Pay.


On 6 Mar 1944 George was evacuated to the 75th Australian Camp Hospital with a back injury (declared to have occurred while on duty and with no negligence involved). On 24 Mar 1944 he was transferred to the 118th Australian general Hospital . After a lengthy period in their care he was released to the York Convalescent Depot on 8 Jun 1944. Re-admitted to the 118th Australian General Hospital on 6 July, he was quickly passed onto the 109th Australian Convalescent depot on 10 Jul 1944. On 31 Jul 1944 he was transferred to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot on 2 Aug 1944 where he was granted leave until 17 Aug 1944. On 4 Nov 1944 he was transferred to the 10th Australian Garrison Battalion who on 7 Aug 1945 detached George to the 29th Australian heavy Anti Aircraft Battery, the detachment lasting until 31 oct 1945 when he returned to his parent unit. On 7 Nov 1945 George was transferred to Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot for discharge which occurred on 14 Nov 1945.
