Allan enlisted in the RAAF on 22 Oct 1940 at the [[No. 4 RAAF Recruiting Centre]], and was posted to [[No.1 Recruit Depot RAAF]] the same day. On 24 Nov 1940 he was posted to [[No. 1 School of Technical Training RAAF]]. having completed this step of his traning he was posted on 26 Jan 1941 to [[No. 1 Engineering School RAAF]], and on competion of that training, he was posted to [[No. 4 Service Flying Training School RAAF]] on 27 Apr 1941. Allan was appointed Leading Aircraftman on 2 Oct 1941, and reposted on 5 Jan 1942 to [[No. 2 Bombing & Air Gunnery School RAAF]].
