War Service
Within a few days of entering camp, Arthur was allocated to the 8th Reinforcement draft for the 46th Battalion. On arrival in England he was sent to the 12th Training Battalion in Codford to complete his training and then proceeded overseas to France through Folkestone on 4 Jun 1917.
In France he spent a few days in the 4th Division's Base Depot in Étaples before joining the 46th Battalion along with 92 others on 21 Jun 1917 as they are going into billets at Le Doulieu, some 10 km west of Armentieres.
Served at Armentieres, Bullecourt, Messines, and Dernancourt. Granted leave to the UK from 9 - 24 Mar 1918.
On 18 Sep 1918 the 46th Battalion made up the third wave of an attack on the German positions known as the Hindenburg Outpost Line. The attack was successful with relatively light casualties on the Australian side. Arthur was one of only 15 killed that day, with another 135 wounded.
WERNDLY.-Killed in action on September 18, 1918, Private Arthur, third beloved son of Mrs. M. Werndly, Armadale, brother of Owen died of wounds, Harry, (Dowerin), Albert, Victoria, Louise and Charles, (Armadale).[1]

Buried in the JEANCOURT COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION - Plot VI, Row A, Grave 1 Son of Henry and Martha Werndly of Armadale, Western Australia. Jeancourt is a small village situated approximately halfway between Péronne and St Quentin.
