Eric enlisted in the Militia on 3 Mar 1941 at Collie and was allocated to the 7th Heavy Brigade RAA . Eric was called up for full time duty on 2 Jul 1941 and transferred with his unit to Darwin on 29 Dec 1941. On 28 Jan 1942 he was transferred to the 14th Anti-Aircraft Battery and on 18 Jun 1942 he transferred to the 2nd AIF.
