War Service
Fred entered Blackboy Hill camp on 4 May 1915 and was allocated initially to the 1st reinforcement draft for the 28th Battalion. At some point he was transferred to the 8th reinforcement draft for the 11th Battalion, and he travelled with them to Egypt aboard HMAT A68 Anchises. On arrival in Egypt Fred was sent to the 1st Training Battalion at Zeitoun, and from there on 21 Oct 1915 to Anzac Cove. On arrival they were kept separate from the 11th Battalion which left for Mudros on 17 Nov 1915, while the reinforcements remained behind in the reinforcement camp carrying out heavy work as they were fresh and unwearied compared to those that had been there for longer. The 8th reinforcement draft, including Fred joined the 11th Battalion at Sarpi on Lemnos Island on 12 Dec 1915.
